Batteries exploding in your face.

One of the by-products of charging or discharging of batteries is that that batteries will start to gas. These gases are explosive.  Any spark around the batteries will cause them to pop, blowing away part of the case and throwing out acid.  

If this gets in your eyes you should see a docor ASAP.  Try to rinse you eyes with water. If you can try to use baking soda (mixed in the water) to neutralize the acid.  I don't know for sure, but of a can of soft drink might help, but it's better than nothing.

The acid will eat your clothes too. So try to rinse those as soon as possible, like within seconds.

Safety glasses are for smart people or for stupid people that have learned the hard way.

I wanted to point out a few battery issues / myths and facts....


Tony is right about the gas coming from a charging battery.... when you charge a battery HYDROGEN gas is released that means if you smoke near charging batteries you are putting your self at serious risk of a flash fire or explosion.


One big NO NO I have seen done a ton of times is when people undo their batteries with a wrench or ect and short out the batteries...Sparks fly, the posts get damaged and sometime bad enough to ruin the battery post all together... Go to the store and buy a wrench that you will only use on your batteries and Plasti-cote or wrap the handle in electrical tape. remember to take your time when dealing with batteries..

When you finish charging let the batteries let them sit before you use the setup.. this gives the battery a chance to cool down and also for the voltage to drop back down to their NORMAL voltages so you'll get better motor life...

A GROUP 31 BATTERY is not a car battery. It is meant to be discharged all the way then recharged all the way. END OF STORY THERE. :angry:

A slow trickle charge will last longer than a quick charge. A quick charge will bring your batteries to a boil quicker and evaporate the electrolite quicker shortening the battery life. Dry cells are bad to battery life.

BAKING SODA WILL netrualize battery acid of you have a spill for any reason..
