When do you rebuild a Marzocchi gear and when do you just get a new one?

Since I am into hopping, I would just replace the whole thing, I might replace the seal if it's leaks.

But if I were to rebuild them, I'd look for a loss of performance. If I bought them used, I'd look to see if there was any scoring.

If I was to get real fancy, I might hook it up and check the vacuum (inlet side) and check for leak down.  And of course pressure and flow.

But I am unsure what is meant by rebuild?  If the gears are messed up, I'd toss it, or save it in the parts bin.

I mean changing the O rings in the gear, and those teflon rings. The gear seems to be loseing pressure the fluid in the tank is foaming pretty bad. Ive also lost alot of pressure.

Seems like I would replace the gear head.  It sounds like there might be a ton of scoring inside. If you take it apart you may see what I mean along the gear housing.

Take note on how you take it apart. mark everyhting or take pics,

Update: I took the gear in 1 of my front pumps apart and the outer (big) O ring was split in 2 . I replaced it and Im gonna rebuild the other front pump tommorrow since I ordered an extra rebuild kit.
